I am Chris, a regular guy on a mission to lose 100 pounds and lower my blood cholesterol. After my Mother suffered a stroke in 2010 at the age of 75, I realized that I was at high risk for cardiovascular disease. I started a low fat diet and lost 22 pounds in one year, however my blood cholesterol increased from 218 mg/dL to 228 mg/dL. My triglycerides also increased from 155 mg/dL to 205 mg/dL. I then discovered the Mediterranean Diet, a moderate-fat diet that includes healthy fats and decided to try it. In the next two years, I lost 44 pounds, lowered my blood cholesterol by 81 mg/dL, and lowered my triglycerides by 138 mg/dL.
For exercise, I walk two miles a day, five days a week. A schedule I can stay with for many years to come. I also strength-train for an hour a day, three days a week.
I started this blog to help people live healthier and lower their risk of cardiovascular disease, the number one killer in the United States. I’ll be writing about exercising, mostly walking, and following a Mediterranean-style diet to live healthier. I hope you join me on this journey to good health.
Update (June 2018): My starting weight was 264 pounds, and I lost a total of 84 pounds in 5.5 years. In July 2017, I weighed 180 pounds. At that point my doctor advised me to stop losing weight and start maintaining my weight. I have successfully kept my weight off since then, and I am still on the Mediterranean Diet. I currently weigh 180 pounds. My blood cholesterol is 163 mg/dL, and my triglycerides are 69 mg/dL. I feel great!
